The format of most intramural sports is either league play with a playoff or a one day tournament. League play is normally organized as pool play where teams are divided into Leagues, based on skill level, and divisions, based on the number of teams signed up. Teams will first be scheduled to play round robin competition within a particular division (4-6 games). Then, the top teams are selected to enter a combined single elimination playoff including all leagues to determine the overall champion in a particular sport.

The format of the one day tournaments will vary depending upon the number of teams or players involved and the amount of time allotted. Most often these tournaments are played in a single elimination format.
